Demonstration Sites
One of the prospective demonstration sites for breadfruit under the new initiative is Villar Farm School on the outskirts of metro Manila.
A project by Philippines Senator Cynthia Villar, chair of the Agriculture Committee, the Farm School hosts dormitories where farmer trainees learn about urban and small-scale agriculture. It has a working dairy of Carabao, a distinct Filipino population of water buffalo that can be traced to Luzon island as far back as 2200 BCE. Today, the water buffalo is the national animal of the Philippines.
Value-added milk and cheese products from water buffalo are made on-site. The Farm School also includes several working composting systems, including a thermophilic setup that produces a finished compost from fresh organic waste in just a few days and a vermicompost setup—fed from household organic waste generated from the adjacent neighborhood community.
