Hawaiʻi ʻUlu Cooperative and partners have developed this guide to implementing sustainable, achievable, and effective agroforestry methods for Hawaiʻi farmers. Benefits of ʻulu agroforestry can include increased soil health and production and decreased reliance on outside inputs such as fertilizer and pesticides.

This guide defines the five agroforestry practices recognized by the USDA as well as helpful allied terms and strategies, and presents real-world examples of how each practice is currently utilized by ʻulu farmers in Hawaiʻi through a series of local case studies.

They cover the many benefits for the people and the ʻaina when using sustainable diversified agriculture and agroforestry, and answer questions about growing these sustainable crops.

Noa Lincoln, Associate professor at UH Manoa CTAHR who will present about indigenous and traditional agroforestry.

Dave Sansone of Agroforestry Design will present about modern agroforestry practices.

Noeʻau Peralto, Executive Director of Hui Mālama i ke Ala ‘Ūlili (huiMAU) a community-driven project which is transitioning of 80 acres of eucalyptus monocrop plantation into ʻulu agroforestry in Hāmākua.

and Zach Mermel of Ola Design Group who assisted huiMAU with their agroforestry design.

Troy Keolanui of O.K. Farms will introduce their new 5 acre agroforesry demonstration farm where they will integrate ʻulu, mamaki, cacao, kalo, banana and pumpkins into their system.

and Harry Greene of Propagate Ventures who is assisting O.K. Farms with agroforestry design and financial projections.
