ʻULU PRODUCTION PRIMER

Spacing & Pruning

Standard spacing of 30×30 provides adequate room to maneuver equipment such as mowers and allows trees to reach full productivity estimated at 300 pounds per tree per year.

Tighter spacing of 25×25 ft allows for more trees per acre but may result in lower per tree production. Even closer spacing between trees in row could be utilized to provide a hedge or windbreak. Light exposure is critical to fruit production in breadfruit – canopies must be adequately pruned to avoid crowding. Having a well pruned canopy also improves air flow, which reduces disease and pest incidence.

Breadfruit grows with a tendency towards apical dominance. Pruning vertical leaders stimulates growth and focuses fruit production on the lateral canopy limbs with fruit bearing on new growth.
