Co-Crop Management Calendar
During breadfruit season our facilities are limited to intaking co-crops as our staff and processing line are usually overwhelmed with record-breaking breadfruit deliveries.
Farmers are encouraged to use this Co-crop Management Calendar to best plan maintenance and harvest activities for kalo, palaʻai (orange squash) and ʻuala (sweet potato) outside of peak breadfruit season which is from September to December. In these months we will not accept co-crop deliveries unless previously agreed upon via a marketing agreement (see below). Click the PDF link above to navigate resources associated with each crop in the gray boxes!
Planting based on the planned time to harvest for each variety helps to ensure we can purchase, process, and market your crop efficiently.
- It is best to plant kalo between March and September, as different varieties can have a 9-12 month period before harvest.
- See our Kalo Harvesting Guide and Growers Guide for more details on growing kalo.
- The best time to plant palaʻai is between October and May, as different types can take 2 months or longer until ready for harvest.
- Check out our Palaʻai Production Guide Part 1 and Part 2 as well as our Harvesting Guidelines for more tips on squash production.
- When planning for ʻuala, typically a 5-6 month in-ground crop until harvest, it is best to plant sweet potato from June through February
- Read our ʻUala Production Guide for basics on planting and maintenance techniques for sweet potato. When planning to sell your co-crops to the cooperative – please plan deliveries between January and June unless another agreement is made in advance. *The co-op only guarantees purchase of breadfruit from registered members – co-crops are purchased at our discretion based on seasonal processing capacity and demand.*
- For larger growers (more than 1,000 lbs a year of any co-crop) please contact us at farmers@eatbreadfruit.com to learn about our structured marketing agreements. Larger volume producers may sign a marketing agreement with the cooperative to guarantee purchase of an agreed upon amount of co-crops throughout the year.
