Make your own hypoallergenic pillow, easy DIY

If you are looking to reuse the compostable insulation received with our frozen food products, here is an easy, step-by-step guide to making your own cushion or travel pillow – shared by one of our customers. Mahalo nui e Logan for this great idea!

“The first step in the process is to stack the two pieces of cotton liner received with your Hawaiʻi ʻUlu Co-op order. Measure them up as best as possible and trim to the desired length you want your pillow to be.

Next, use a hot glue gun to stick the pieces together.

Then grab some fabric (or even an old t-shirt you may have lying around the house) and, just like wrapping up Christmas presents, measure the fabric to make sure it will completely cover the compostable liners.

Once you have that figured out, the next step is to sew by hand (or with a sewing machine) the bottom and partially up one side of the fabric to make a pillowcase.

The final step is to stuff the pillowcase with the compostable liner and sew up the last edge of fabric. And there you have it: your own small pillow that can be used in many different ways – from an eco-friendly, hypoallergenic sleeping pillow, to an airplane travel pillow, or even a seat cushion for your beloved kūpuna – you have now wonderfully repurposed the compostable liner!” – Logan S., Honolulu, Hawaiʻi
