Natural Nutrient Management Methods for ʻUlu Trees
Long before synthetic fertilizers were ever created, Native Hawaiians and other indigenous peoples around the world developed their own nutrient management techniques to build soil health, fertility and overall productivity of crops.
Although we have organic products available in modern agriculture today, these traditional techniques are still a relevant and increasingly popular alternative to manage nutrients.
Much of the natural nutrient management strategies of today are biodynamic – they partner with biology and natural cycles. It builds upon the understanding that healthy plants require a balanced microbiome, both within the soil and on the plants themselves. These practices are often low-cost, low-impact, and adaptable.
In the video below we introduce a number of natural alternatives that our farmers use to manage nutrients for their ʻUlu trees. Examples of these methods include:
- Compost & Compost Tea
- Chop & Drop Mulch
- Korean Natural Farming liquid amendments
