‘Ulu Co-op Supply Chain Development

Defining Levels of Engagement for Partner Organizations Across the Pae ʻAina

This page provides an overview of program concepts and loosely frames the discussion around ʻulu supply chain coordination for Hawaiʻi ʻUlu Cooperative (HUC) partners on neighbor islands (Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, and Lanaʻi). There are many ways that organizations can partner with on the mission to revitalize ʻulu as a viable crop and dietary staple for Hawaiʻi; and this requires working collaboratively to coordinate supply in order to achieve scale and stable pricing for the long-term benefit of Hawaiʻi farmers and all parties throughout the value chain.

Why?

To help grow Hawaiʻi’s ʻulu industry and amplify its impact on local agriculture, food security, ʻāina conservation, and economic development – all while deepening our relationships to build a more resilient Hawaiʻi nei. Rather than many ʻulu farms and brands competing amongst each other in a market with limited supply and production capacity, working together will strengthen the movement overall.

Level 1- Become a Co-op Member

Concept

Join as a Farmer Member

HUC is a farmer-owned cooperative business. Our farmer suppliers are owners of the organization and govern through democratic processes, including by electing the Board of Directors.

Contribution/Terms

Must have at least one ‘ulu tree, be approved by the HUC Board of Directors, and contribute at least one ‘ulu harvest to the co-op each season. Membership buy-in costs $100 and is redeemable upon exit from the co-op.

Benefits to Organization

Members receive a guaranteed market and stable price for their ʻulu so they can focus on farming! They also receive robust technical support (e.g. annual farm consultations, tissue/soil sampling. nutrient recommendations, etc.) and are eligible for profit sharing.

Benefits to Hawaiʻi

Farmers gain access to a community of like minded producers with collective power and a shared vision that stabilizes the overall supply, price, and quality needed to sustain the growing ʻulu market over the long term. By working together, farmers achieve more than the sum of their parts!

Level 2 – Become an Anchor Supplier

Concept

Free pick-up service for your ʻulu when volumes meet required thresholds (must be pre-approved to quality).

Contribution/Terms

Only growers who are farmer-members in good standing and of a certain scale are eligible to participate. For FY23, the min. volume to qualify for this program is 1,000 pounds.

Benefits to Organization

Guaranteed sales and convenient pick-ups for your fruit during peak ʻulu season.

Benefits to Hawaiʻi

Coordinated, consistent supply contributes to the growth of the industry and revitalization of ʻulu as a dietary staple in Hawaiʻi.

Level 3 – Become an Aggregation Partner

Concept

Become a drop off location for other ʻulu farmers and/or co-op members in your region to market their fruit.

Contribution/Terms

Receive training from HUC to sort for maturity, quality and grading according to co-op standards, establish regular receiving hours with at least two days per week, and record farmer intake lots. Aggregation partners must have capacity to aggregate at least 1,000 pounds per week.

Benefits to Organization

Additional revenue for every pound of fruit aggregated from other farmers at your location, and free pick-up for aggregated lots above 1,000 pounds (must be pre-approved). Current FY23 aggregator pricing is 20 cents per pound received (does not apply to your own fruit sales to HUC).

Benefits to Hawaiʻi

Small farms get access to convenient drop-off locations, expanding farmer income while reducing food waste.

Level 4 – Assist with Transport Logistics

Concept

Transport fresh ʻulu and other Hawaiʻi-grown staples from aggregation sites to HUC and partner processing centers weekly during season, or fresh fruit and value added products to customers on an as needed basis.

Contribution/Terms

Reliable transport vehicles; pickup or box trucks acceptable. Commit to making same day pickups and deliveries to ensure fruit quality.

Benefits to Organization

Get paid per pick-up / delivery.

Benefits to Hawaiʻi

An industry cannot thrive without supply chain logistics to make it possible.

Level 5 – Become a Processing Partner

Concept

Utilize your facilities to co-pack HUC products. HUC has several growing product lines that require expanded production. Letʻs work together so the ʻulu market does not lose momentum!

Contribution/Terms

Receive training to make HUC products. Items produced by co-packers are sold under the HUC brand, and a service fee is remitted per unit manufactured.

Benefits to Organization

Increase revenue generation with turn-key product manufacturing. Maximize the return on your facilities without having to focus on product development, marketing, and sales.

Benefits to Hawaiʻi

Rather than competing amongst each other for customers, shelf-space, and funding, we can work together to grow a truly viable industry for Hawaiʻi at scale.

Level 6 – Become an ʻUlu Tree Supplier

Concept

Propagate ‘ulu trees in coordination with HUC to help fulfill overwhelming demand among farmers and backyard growers.

Contribution/Terms

Receive training from HUC on various propagation techniques. Commit to propagating agreed upon varieties at whatever quantity per month you have capacity for.

Benefits to Organization

Guaranteed market and stable price for ʻulu trees propagated. HUC will handle customer administration and logistics so you can focus on growing trees! Payment is on a per tree basis and currently ranges from $15-25 per tree.

Benefits to Hawaiʻi

Increasing the supply of ʻulu trees available for farmers and backyard growers to plant. Access to seedlings of diverse varieties is currently a major bottleneck in growth of the industry and movement in Hawaiʻi.
